What is the Criminal Justice Act (CJA)?

In order to ensure that indigent defendants have access to competent representation in court, the federal government makes available funds through the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) (Title 18, 3006A of the United States Code). The Northern District’s CJA is managed by the Clerk of Court’s Criminal Justice Act Unit.

The CJA Unit does more than just manage payments to attorneys and experts; they also act as a resource for panel members who are representing low-income clients.
